Stopping Forest Loss in the Land of Thoreau
New England is losing its forests. Of all America's forests
under pressure from development, New England's are shrinking the
fastest."The window for conserving forests is closing,"
says Andy Swinton, director of field science with The Nature Conservancy,
a nonprofit habitat conservation organization. But "there's
really an opportunity here, because the next 20 years will determine
the character of New England forests. This is a race against time,
and the time to act is now." (The Christian Science Monitor)
The Green Hour
Children who regularly spend unstructured time outside:
-Play more creatively
-Have lower stress levels
-Have more active imaginations
-Become fitter and leaner
-Develop stronger immune systems
-Experience fewer symptoms of ADD and ADHD
-Have greater respect for themselves, for others, and for the environment
The National Wildlife Federation recommends that parents give their kids a "Green Hour" every day, a time for unstructured play and interaction with the natural world. This can take place in a garden, a backyard, the park down the street, or any place that provides safe and accessible green spaces where children can learn and play. Snowboarding Lessons
For over a decade, the Stowe Snowboard School has delivered some of the most progressive snowboarding lessons in the snowboarding industry. As the home mountain and corporate partner of Burton Snowboards, its only logical that Stowe was one of the first resorts to help develop and host the Learn to Ride (LTR) program.
Did your new garden furniture, construction lumber, printer paper or book cost an orangutan its home?
Few of us may know the origin of the forest products we purchase. And even fewer know whether these forests were sustainably managed and legally harvested before the timber made its way into the finished products that we have in our homes and offices. But knowing matters. And choosing responsibly — asking for and buying wood and paper products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) — is good for people, good for forests and good for the planet.

Tips and Techniques: Dehydrating Foods at Home - Getting Started
Preserving food by drying is as old as mankind. Laying meat and berries out served people well for thousands of years, and the technique still works. The process can be as simple and rudimentary as hanging fish in the sun or laying meat on a rack above a smoking fire. (Get Outdoors)

The National Wildlife Federation's Backyard Wildlife Habitat national certification program encourages everyone to plan their landscape with the needs of wildlife in mind. There are over 30,000 backyard sites certified in the program including homeowners, businesses, community groups and schools. All you need to do is provide four basic habitat elements: food, water, cover, and places to raise young. Once you are certified you can order and post an attractive yard sign to convey to your friends and neighbors your commitment to wildlife conservation and the environment.
