Seasonal:

Marrowbone
An annual Fall celebration (October 4 and 5, 2008) of story and storytelling performed outside in the blaze of the autumn woods. The audience, in groups, travels a winding path peopled by storytellers, singers, dancers, and musicians. At at the end of the path: a pine wood, food and drink, companionship, a warm fire. After all groups have walked the storied path, all gather at the stage in the pine wood to listen to longer stories told by master storytellers.

OTHER THEATRE PROGRAMS

Project Spark
Springboard into the Performing Arts for Rural Kids Educational Outreach Program for Grades 1-8 We all know the impact that the Arts can have on children. Among other things, learning in, and through the Arts improves reading skills, math ability and even SAT scores. Arts education has been proven to help “level the playing field” across socio-economic boundaries and to significantly improve critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making. Through partnerships with some of the State’s best musicians, dancers, actors and arts organizations, Project SPARK offers Addison County schools a choice of 14 unique, curriculum based arts experiences.

Very Merry Theatre Performances and Camps for Kids
Started in 2002, Very Merry Theatre is a unique touring theater company for children and teenagers, ages 6-18, as well as talented adult actors. Each year, the young actors collaborate on the performance of classical drama and literature including works by Shakespeare, Dickens, and Twain and great Broadway musicals. The centerpiece of Very Merry Theatre is a unique, 19th century style traveling theater wagon, complete with a fold-out stage, which is transported to community settings, transforming local parks into live theater venues for our performances.
119 Spruce Street Burlington, Vermont 05401
802-863-6607 or 802-355-1461

Kids on Stage
A theater group in Middlebury for young actors and adults who work together on performances for the community. In existence since 2001, Kids on Stage is unique because they cast every child who auditions and teach community service by empowering the Kids on Stage to make decisions about which organizations should receive “grants” for worthwhile projects in the community. For more information, call Pam Taylor at 802-388-0178.

The drum class is a hand drumming session where you learn variations of music from West Africa. The dance class is a cardio workout done barefoot to live drumming. The steps are broken down and taught in a new choreography each night.
The first Thursday of the month is at the Vergennes Opera House and the remaining Thursdays are at New Haven Town Hall.
Drum - $15; Dance- $12
Teens and Adults and beginners are welcome.

MUSIC LESSONS

Vermont Youth Orchestra's Music Teacher Directory

Vermont Ballet Theater School

Why Orchestral Movie Scores Aren't Classical Music
Can film music ever be construed as 'classical'? No matter what the Classic FM programmers feel, Pirates of the Caribbean is not a classical opus. Nor is the theme from Schindler's List. (The Guardian)

New Online Interactive for Music Education
The Kennedy Center Education Department launches a website for learning the form and function of the symphony orchestra: Perfect Pitch. If you like orchestral music or just like baseball, then it's time to take the field! (Kennedy Center)

Creative Theatre Resources
Creative dramatics is not limited to staged, formal plays. You can gain so much more from regular school subjects if you make learning come alive using creative dramatics.

Classics for Kids
A special website designed to help you introduce your child to classical music. Music not only has the power to stimulate the mind, enrich the heart and soothe the soul; it can help children to think more creatively, develop craftsmanship and discipline, and learn the value of excellence. The Parents section contains information that will help you guide your child's interest in music and its study successfully. Each program is about five minutes long and very engaging, and so easy to listen to online.

Theatre Games for Kids and Adults
Games are incredibly useful in a theatre classroom and can be played to increase performance or creative skills. Most theatre games have no winners or losers. The participants work individually or with others to accomplish the goal of the game, and if the goal is not accomplished at the first try, the participants have still learned something from the experience.

Playing in the Orchestral Team
Learn about musical instruments in an orchestra by exploring the Kennedy Center's ARTSEDGE Look*Listen*Learn Web site Perfect Pitch. The site draws parallels between orchestral instruments and baseball players.

Dance Party
Preteens love to dance, preferably at home alone in front of the mirror. But invite a group of them to a disco-themed birthday dance, crank disco CDs, and watch dance fever sweep the floor.

Put on a Play!
Children and their friends and/or families can do up a skit in a day, or work on a performance for an entire summer or vacation week. You can even just sit together and read the script out loud. Check out these free scripts.

Whootie Owl's Reader's Theatre Play Scripts: Free
